The Experiment

Paul and I have launched a little two week experiment - we're going to attempt to use only one car on weekdays. This idea was born because of the parking situation at Cornell. (Number one downside to working in academia.) I have to drive a mile past my office to reach my parking lot, and then backtrack for a mile on foot.

Ithaca has a part to play in all of this. In another location, I might just go with it. But everyone here is hyper-environmentally conscious. That really makes you think about your own personal impact on the planet.

Other than driving, I have three options for getting to/from work.

1. Paul drops me off. Easiest and most convenient, except for when he wants to stay at the gym until 8 p.m. or ride his bike. Also requires being pleasant in the morning, which I'm not always good at.
2. The bus. It's a mile walk from our house to the nearest bus stop and the schedule is limited, but I'm going to give it a go.
3. My bike. It's only six miles, and I think I can get a locker at the gym. The problem with this option at the moment is that it's usually dark and the tiny country roads are REALLY dark. In a month or two, this will be a much better option.

Any bets on how long this will last?

Does anyone know of a company that makes screens that separate the driver and passenger in a 2002 Subaru or 1999 Civic? Only joking, darling!

This sounds like a fun experiment! When I take on challenges like this, I tend to get a little obsessive about them. Like when I used to ride my bike to work. It started as a fun challenge, until I got so obsessive about it that I'd bike in the snow. My latest obsession is going home for lunch. I absolutely refuse to spend money on lunch, and I always forget to pack it, so if I have a meeting scheduled at lunchtime I'll wait until 2 p.m. to eat and practically pass out on the way home. God forbid I'd actually buy something from the cafeteria!

you goofs in ithaca should think more like the greenies in SoCal...that way, you can prattle on about other people wasting gas yet still refuse to walk more than 10 feet to anything.

But we do it in hybrids! (Or Nat Gas Civics, depending on the nerd level)
